Charge your phone while you ride!

Nokia launched a quartet of basic cellphones for the developing world in Nairobi today, but the most interesting new offering is a peripheral device. The Finnish firm's Bicycle Charger Kit consists of a little bottle dynamo that you attach to the wheel of your bicycle to power up your phone as you pedal away. It comes with a phone holder that attaches to the handlebars using a hi-tech system composed of an elastic band and a plastic bag, in case of rain. Its price (in Kenya) is a little over $18 bucks, and it's a wonder that no other phone manufacturer has thought of this before.

Maybe that's because Nokia is the dumbphone ruler of the world. While other companies push ahead in the smartphone market, Nokia is concentrating on keeping less wealthy nations connected. And in parts of the world where access to electricity is limited, or unavailable, this Nokia kit is golden. Can you see the charging stations in villages miles out in the African bush, staffed by a bunch of kids on stationary bikes, cycling away to charge people's cellphones?

We received the Torker Cargo T a few months ago and we wanted to make sure we put it through its paces by testing this bike in real life USAGE scenarios. Since the model is called “cargo”, I wanted to test out how strong these stock racks are. Some were concerned that the weight limits (20lbs in the front and 40lbs in the rear) were going to be too light for a true “cargo bike.”

Well, I’m glad to tell you through months of testing/riding, the racks have NEVER posed any type of problems. I was worried that the nuts and bolts provided would either bend or snap in half. But after loading it up many times with items from my own kids, to boxes of crap that needed to be thrown out, as well as adults, the rack system held up really well. Personally I’m not a big fan of loading up a bike on the front since it makes it squirrelly when riding.

I wouldn’t recommend this, but both passengers, front and rear each weigh 100lbs. I weigh about 210lbs….That’s one strong bike!

Kuat Innovations NV Rack Review

I absolutely love how well the KUAT NV Rack works. I think its well built, very stable and great features that other racks don’t have. Such as the cam that tightens the rack against your hitch, and the built in workstand. I’ve found that the KUAT NV rack is pretty easy to use and very stylish. I like the anodized orange parts and the greyish paint on the bulk of the rack. It looks way better than the traditional black racks.

I’ve never experience any problems with the rack and it has kept my bikes safe and secure even while I was traveling over 80mph on the freeway. So what are you waiting for, get one!
